Gambling addiction can lead to physical violenceWhen someone suffers from a casino addiction, they feel an overwhelming urge to gamble, which can lead them to commit wrongdoing.

We have just received further proof of this during a recent trial which took place in France.

A 47-year-old man of Belgian origin went so far as to beat his French partner, with whom he has been in a relationship for 10 years. She refused to give him money so he could go and get even more at the casino.

At the end of his trial, he was sentenced to a three-month suspended prison sentence.

Following a gaming session in a casino

The incident that interests us in today’s news story took place on October 31st. The accused and his partner went to a land-based casino near their home. Our man began gambling and losing. He was in a daze.

This is why his partner left the complex before getting into her car. She was followed by her boyfriend, who demanded €800 from her to get back on track.

When she refused to pay him the money, he hit her in the head. In court, he admitted to slapping her. After the incident, the woman went to the police station to file a complaint. She then claimed that she had been asking him to leave for four months.

A total work interruption of 7 days for the victim

The accused doesn’t really understand what happened. According to him, his relationship remains strong. In fact, he claims they were supposed to enter into a civil partnership at the end of the year. He therefore minimizes or disputes his partner’s version of events. Whatever happens, he apologizes for everything he may have done and acknowledges that he goes completely crazy when he starts drinking. Thus, he knows he needs to seek treatment.

Nevertheless, he loves her with all his heart and keeps repeating that he has never been violent before. And besides, he hasn’t been convicted either.

However, photographs of the victim after the incident prove that the altercation was particularly violent. Moreover, the woman still appeared terrified when she recounted the incident to investigators.

She claims to have believed her life was in danger. And then she was given no less than seven days of total sick leave, which gives a pretty good idea of the violence of the beatings.

In any case, she already didn’t want to live with him before the incident. Indeed, she brings his dual addiction closer to her. He has alcohol problems and has been banned from casinos in Belgium.

A ban on all contact with the victim

The accused awaited the verdict of his trial with a heavy heart. President Nicolas Pautrat believes the facts are serious enough to warrant sanctions.

As a result, our man was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years with a mandatory period of treatment and work. In addition, he was prohibited from having any contact with the victim and from going within 50 meters of his home.
