Casino in the Lausanne metropolitan areaThe Swiss Federal Council recently launched a call for tenders for a second large casino in the Canton of Vaud. Planned for the Lausanne metropolitan area, it is scheduled to open on January 1, 2025.

Among the three candidates are two French operators: Partouche and Tranchant, as well as Kursaal Bern. Now, all that remains is to see who will ultimately succeed in convincing the Federal Council.

A decision expected by the end of 2023

The three proposals were published on Friday, February 17th. Municipal authorities will give their opinion on each of them. However, it will be the Seven Wise Men of the Federal Council who will make the final decision, with no possibility of appeal, by the end of 2023.

The future gaming establishment, announced in April 2022, is scheduled to open in the Lausanne metropolitan area. It will be the second major casino in the Canton of Vaud, which also includes the Casino Barrière de Montreux.

Focus on the 3 proposals for the casino in the Lausanne metropolitan area

Since October 2022, the municipality of Romanel-sur-Lausanne and the Kursaal Bern company have presented a casino project in the Les Marais industrial and commercial zone. The project continues to generate enthusiasm among Mayor Claudia Perrin, who fully supports it. According to her, it has everything it takes to promote the municipality and the entire region by creating jobs and synergies with businesses. In addition, it would bring in significant revenue for the municipality through taxes.

Led by the Partouche group, the casino project in the heart of downtown Lausanne in the Flon district, however, failed to convince the city hall. The gambling establishment primarily targets a young, nocturnal clientele. For Mayor Grégoire Junod, this strategy does not seem optimal. Indeed, he believes that this target market has a relatively small budget that does not mesh well with a casino.

According to him, the playground complex would not represent a real asset for the municipality. Moreover, it hardly fits with the image that the city of Lausanne wishes to promote.

Finally, there is also a casino project being spearheaded by the Tranchant group in the Malley district of Prilly. No specific information about this proposal has been officially released yet. Moreover, Mayor Alain Gillièron has announced that he will not discuss the project in further detail before the by-election on March 12.

Nevertheless, his deputy, Maurizio Matin, did indicate that the project could be of interest to the municipality. The municipal representative for Social Affairs (Anne Bourquin Büchi), for her part, acknowledged that the Tranchant group offered extremely serious guarantees regarding the monitoring of compulsive gamblers.
