The American Gaming Association releases 2021 US gaming industry figuresLike almost everywhere else on the planet, the gaming industry in the United States was particularly hard hit by the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Nevertheless, it quickly managed to recover from the difficulties linked to the global health crisis.

We have just received further confirmation of this through various figures published recently by the American Gaming Association .

These even tell us that gross revenues in 2021 recorded a brand new historical record.

Total revenue of nearly $52.99 billion

The AGA recently compiled the 2021 U.S. gaming industry results for the District of Columbia and the 33 U.S. states where gaming is legal. This results in total revenue of nearly $52.99 billion, a new all-time record. It significantly surpasses the previous record of just $43.65 billion set in 2019.

In short, it’s safe to say that 2021 was a particularly good year for the US gaming industry. This success can be explained by the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, which led to certain restrictions, such as lockdowns, among other things.

As soon as the situation began to improve, Americans decided to return en masse to their entertainment. As a result, there was unprecedented activity in the country’s gambling halls.

Some figures

As always, slot machines attracted the most players. Indeed, of the $52.99 billion earned in 2021, $32.53 billion was on this type of device, which represents a 68% increase compared to 2020 and a 10% increase compared to 2019. Revenue from traditional games, meanwhile, amounted to $8.78 billion, an increase of 67% compared to 2020 and a 1.1% increase compared to 2019.

So, if we combine $32.53 billion from slot machines with $8.78 billion from traditional games, we get no less than $41.31 billion, which is 78% of the revenue of the gaming industry in the United States in 2021.

Sports betting also enjoyed considerable success in 2021, reaching $4.29 billion. The online casino sector, meanwhile, generated $3.71 billion.

Nevada leads followed by New Jersey

Of the 34 legal markets in the United States, the AGA reports that all were up from 2020, with 23 even setting records for gross gaming revenue.

Of course, Nevada still reigns supreme. Gaming revenue there reached $13.4 billion, setting a new all-time record, surpassing the previous $12.85 billion recorded in 2007.

New Jersey then takes second place thanks to Atlantic City, which posted gross gaming revenue of $2.55 billion in 2021. However, these results remain below the $2.68 billion generated in 2019.
